Hi,

my first post, so please be kind and forgiving!

I've had Spykee for about 9 months, but the battery life has been dreadful - about 5 minutes of roaming around, if I'm lucky.

I've just bought a replacement higher powered battery, but now I'm getting cold feet - I'm not very mechanically-minded.

Could someone tell me, is the battery replacement surgery easy enough?  I'm hoping the base unit will just unscrew and it will be a matter of unplugging the old and inplugging the new...  If it's more complex than that, any tips would be VERY gratefully received!

Thanks!

Ok... so nobody answered my question.   Cry

I went ahead and tried to replace the battery anyway.

So, just in case anyone with the same problem finds this forum via Google, I'm going to answer the question myself - hopefully it will help someone.

Writing as one UTTER newbie to another, here's how I changed my Spykee battery.  Those of you who are mechanical geniuses and too clever to reply to such basic questions might like to read it too, just for a laugh (or a reminder of how it feels to be an utter newbie).

1.  Open Spykee.  Four obvious screws on the bottom, four not-quite-so-obvious up a bit, hidden by the treads.  Take the treads off to get at them.

2.  Remove the base carefully, because there are various fragile wires connecting the main body to the base you've just unscrewed.  I *suppose* you could unplug these, but I found I didn't need to.  Just  be careful not to put too much strain on any of them.

3.  See the battery?  Ok, just exchange it with the replacement.  Easy, huh?  Well,
that's what I was expecting, but alas, NO.  You WON'T see the battery.  I sat for a silly length of time thinking, "OMG!  NOW what do I do??? Where IS it?"

4.  Actually it's  buried deep.  I don't think the manufacturers intended us plebs to mess with this.  First you have to unscrew the motherboard thingie.  Four screws.

5.  THEN you have to unscrew the plastic panel UNDER the motherboard thingie.  You'll finally see the batteries.

6.  Changing them is easy enough, once you get to this point.

7.  Reverse the steps to put Spykee back together again.

And that's all there is to it.

Just a tip for battery life: These are NiMH batteries, which mean they have a memory issue, meaning that they remember how full they were last tiome they began charging. The point is, always fully recharge before operation (I know, it's hard sometimes to wait) and run the battery completely down once in a while, more often is better.

Cheers.

I'd also like to know what batteries you purchased?  Any photos?

Hi,

The battery pack is an eight cell "AA" size flat pack. (2 rows of 4 cells). There's a guy on Ebay selling replacement packs, 2,600 mAh for just over £10 plus postage. I've had 2 off him and they're great. (Electroquest123 is the seller).
I've replaced 2 packs in 2 Spykees now and once you've done it once, it's fairly straightforward, excellent tutorial above, by the way. The original packs in these things were crap, to put it bluntly and Meccano should have been shot for supplying such pieces of junk. I'm sure the robot would have been a lot more popular had so many problems with it initially due to these batteries not been so evident and then broadcast around the forums.
Now you've had the bottle to take Spykee apart, have a go at the head tilting mod. Makes him far more useful. CDRsKulls done a pretty good tutorial on the subject but feel free to drop a line in the forum if you want any info.

Regards,

Nat.

Hi Laurent,

I live in England, near Telford in Shropshire. Drop the guy an email at: info@electroquestuk.com   I can't see there being any problem mailing to France but if you have any issues, let me know and I can perhaps order it and then mail it onto you provided you are willing to cover the cost of postage etc.

Regards,

Nat.
